Position: Full-time Custodian – West Middlesex Catholic Family of Parishes Primary Work Location: All Saints Parish – 124 Front Street East, Strathroy Commitment: 40 hours per week. Normal weekly schedule: 7:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday to Friday - willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends is required to meet business needs. Compensation: Expected salary range:$21.00 - $24.00 per hour. Placement within this range is commensurate with relevant industry experience, qualifications (education, skills) and/or professional designations. This position is eligible for participation in the DOL’s lay staff benefits and pension plans. Three (3) weeks of paid vacation time annually. Posting Date: September 14, 2026 Closing Date: October 12, 2026 Availability: The position will become vacant on December 19, 2026. The anticipated start date is mid-November to provide the successful candidate with approximately one month of training and transition support before assuming the role independently. POSITION SUMMARY Reporting to the Office/Business Manager, the Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and overall condition of parish facilities, including the church, offices, halls, and building exteriors. Working collaboratively with parish staff, ministry groups, and facility users, the Custodian helps provide a safe, welcoming, and well-maintained environment that supports the mission and activities of the parish community. SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
Cleans and maintains all buildings including the church, offices, parish halls, meeting rooms, washrooms facilities, other common areas and the exterior entry points.
Perform routine and/or annual cleaning tasks such as vacuuming, mopping, dusting, garbage and recycling removal, window cleaning and ensuring entry and exit doors are clean and entirely unobstructed to guarantee safe, clear pathways for parishioners and staff.
Ensure all facilities, equipment, and mechanical/electrical systems such as heating and cooling are operational and well maintained.
Responsible for minor repairs and operational activities within the church, office, hall, rectory, etc.
Identifies areas requiring major repairs and reports them to the Pastor/Business Manager (e.g. roof, doors, equipment, etc.).
Snow shoveling and de-icing of all main entrance ways and emergency exits as required.
Sets up/takes down chairs and tables for parish functions and events as coordinated by administrative staff.
Works with volunteers when necessary to set up special events (e.g. Easter Celebrations, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Annual Feasts, etc.).
As approved by the Manager or Pastor, engages with external companies/contractors to perform services as needed (e.g., plumber, electrician, heating/cooling).
Other duties of a similar nature as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum of secondary school grade 12 diploma or Ontario accepted equivalent.
Previous custodial or building maintenance experience preferred.
Prior experience in industrial or office building cleaning and performing property maintenance.
Prior hands-on experience operating industrial floor polishers and/or floor cleaning machines is an asset.
Mechanical knowledge for minor repairs (e.g. plumbing, electrical, HVAC, drywall, painting).
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in the safe handling and use of cleaning chemicals, equipment, and cleaning procedures.
Professional, pleasant, courteous and welcoming disposition.
Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality.
Basic computer skills, including the ability to communicate effectively by email.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Works well independently with minimum supervision as well as within a team.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and respond to changing operational needs.
Ability and willingness to work flexible hours based on event schedules, including weekends and evenings as needed to meet business needs.
Reliable, dependable, and committed to maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment.
