Having an up-to-date Will is one of the most practical gifts you can give your family. It ensures that what you’ve built over your lifetime is distributed according to your wishes—and that the people you care about are looked after with clarity and care.
provide for loved ones and dependants first,
name an executor you trust,
reduce confusion and stress for your family,
and ensure any charitable gifts reflect your values and intentions.
If a person dies without a Will, their estate is distributed according to provincial rules. Those rules may not reflect what you would have wanted—especially in blended families, second marriages, or situations involving caregiving and dependants.
We encourage you to speak with a qualified lawyer and financial advisor when preparing or updating your Will.
If you do not currently have a lawyer, the Law Society of Ontario offers a Law Society Referral Service that can connect Ontario residents with a lawyer or paralegal for a brief consultation.
